How the Diocese of Hamilton Expands Archives AccessPosted by:

Director of Library & Archives

The Bishop Farrell Library & Archives collects, preserves, and provides for research the official documents of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton—with the help of Eloquent Archives software. We manage collections for our 120 parishes, our current and past bishops, and our affiliate institutions and organizations.

These records present a history of the Catholic church in Ontario, as well as an account of the people in the region. The Diocese of Hamilton was established in 1856 to provide support to the Catholics of the area. It has since grown to become the second largest English-speaking Roman Catholic Diocese in Canada.

A few years ago, renewed emphasis was placed on improving the functionality of the Library and Archives for both staff and patrons. At this time purchasing a database to facilitate consistent and RAD compliant documentation of the Archives’ holdings was a main goal. After researching several options, we chose Eloquent Archives; starting with the Software as a Service package. After a year of hosting our data with Eloquent we purchased the software for use on our own server.

Attractive, streamlined, easy to use

The Diocese of Hamilton was essentially “starting from scratch” in terms of the documentation and description of our Archival holdings. We wanted a database that would be flexible, user-friendly, and provide room to grow as we developed, and with Eloquent Archives we found it. We have continued to add modules over time as our needs have expanded, including the De/Accession Module, Space Management, and Research Management. Most recently we have upgraded to the Mobile Friendly Public Search. The new public interface is attractive, streamlined, and above all easy to use for those searching our records.

I have found the Eloquent software user-friendly and adaptable to our needs. This flexibility has served us well as we expanded from a small, single staffed environment to a vibrant Archives with three full-time staff members and a team of regular volunteers and interns. Eloquent has allowed us to seamlessly facilitate our growth. The customer support has been exceptional at every step!
